Avalon replacement. Hybrid Max (340 hp) is the halo. Lifted sedan styling polarizing.

Single generation in the US (the 16th global Crown overall, first US Crown since 1972). Built at Tsutsumi, Japan on Toyota's TNGA-K platform. Crossover body style only for the US — globally there are also Sport, Sedan, Estate variants. Two powertrains: standard hybrid (2.5L Dynamic Force I4 + dual electric motors, 236 hp combined system, AWD via electric rear motor, eCVT — same hybrid system as Camry / RAV4 Hybrid), and the Hybrid Max (2.4L turbo Dynamic Force I4 + larger electric motors, 340 hp / 400 lb-ft combined, 6-speed direct-shift automatic instead of CVT — Toyota's first hybrid with stepped-gear transmission, mechanical AWD with rear bias). 0-60 in 5.7 sec on Hybrid Max, 7.6 sec on standard hybrid. EPA 30 mpg combined on standard, 28 mpg on Hybrid Max. Cabin: 12.3-inch touchscreen standard, 12.3-inch digital cluster on Limited / Platinum. JBL 11-speaker premium audio standard on Limited+. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) standard. Trims: XLE (base hybrid only, FWD/AWD), Limited (mid-trim, hybrid only or Hybrid Max), Platinum (top trim, Hybrid Max only, two-tone roof, 21-inch wheels). 2025 mid-cycle refresh: minor front fascia changes, updated infotainment, addition of optional second-row screen package on Platinum. The lifted sedan silhouette — about 5 inches taller than Camry, with crossover-style fender flares but a sedan greenhouse — is intentionally polarizing. Toyota's marketing positioned it as 'the Crown is back' but US buyers haven't embraced the design as enthusiastically as Toyota hoped. Crown Signia wagon variant (different platform body) launched separately for 2025 model year.

Strengths

  • Hybrid Max 340 hp / 400 lb-ft
  • First Crown in US since 1972 — historic nameplate
  • AWD standard on all trims
  • 30 mpg combined on standard hybrid
  • Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard

Weaknesses

  • Polarizing lifted-sedan styling
  • Slow US sales vs Avalon peak
  • Hybrid Max combined fuel economy lower than expected
  • Cargo space limited by sloping roof
  • AWD only on Hybrid Max (not standard hybrid)

Notable tech

  • TNGA-K platform
  • Hybrid Max 2.4L turbo + electric (6-speed)
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen + digital cluster
  • Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
  • JBL 11-speaker premium
  • Direct AWD on Hybrid Max (mechanical)
  • eCVT on standard hybrid

Common issues

  • Touchscreen freezes (early build)
  • Hybrid battery cooling fan noise
  • Two-tone paint clear coat issues
  • 12V battery drain on accessory loads
  • Adaptive cruise phantom braking (TSS 3.0)
  • Front lower control arm bushings
  • AWD coupling sensor faults (Hybrid Max)

Used-market budget

$42,000

XLE base $32-40k. Limited $40-48k. Platinum (Hybrid Max only) $48-58k. Two-tone paint commands modest premium. Strong residuals — Crown is rare so used examples don't depreciate as quickly as Avalon did.
