GMC Canyon Three Generations (2004-present)
Colorado's GMC twin. 3rd gen all 2.7L turbo. AT4X with 35s and locking diffs is the off-road halo.
Three generations covered. 1st gen (GMT355, 2004-2012): launched 2003 as 2004 model year — sister to Chevrolet Colorado and Hummer H3 (which used the same body-on-frame platform). 2.8L I4, 3.5L I5 (200 hp), 3.7L I5 (242 hp from 2007), and limited 5.3L V8 (300 hp) offered briefly. 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. RWD or 4WD with low range. Underwent multiple updates across the 8-year run. 2nd gen (GMT700/31XX, 2015-2022): complete redesign on a new mid-size truck platform. 2.5L Ecotec I4 (200 hp), 3.6L LFX/LGZ V6 (305-308 hp / 269-275 lb-ft), and the unique 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel I4 (181 hp / 369 lb-ft, available 2016-2022) — the only diesel mid-size pickup sold in America during that period (until the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel briefly competed). 6-speed manual on V6 / I4 (early years), 8-speed automatic later. RWD or 4WD. AT4 off-road trim added for 2020 — 17-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, hill descent control. 3rd gen (T1XX, 2023-present): redesigned in lockstep with Colorado. Single powertrain: 2.7L turbocharged I4 LK0/L3B (replacing both V6 and diesel). Three tunes: 237 hp (base, on Elevation), 310 hp / 390 lb-ft (volume, on AT4 / Denali / Elevation upgrade), and 310 hp / 430 lb-ft ('Turbo Plus' on AT4X / AEV Edition). 8-speed automatic. RWD or 4WD with low range. AT4X trim: 3-inch lift, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrains, Multimatic DSSV adaptive dampers (same supplier as Colorado ZR2), electronic locking front and rear differentials, factory winch mount, skid plates. AT4X AEV Edition (2024+): AEV-developed (American Expedition Vehicles) ultimate spec — boron steel skid plates, AEV-designed suspension components, additional armor, AEV-specific wheels and graphics, ~$72k MSRP. The AT4X / AT4X AEV is the most factory-off-road-capable mid-size pickup since the Tacoma TRD Pro Trailhunter. Denali trim added for 2024 — pushed Canyon into luxury mid-size truck territory with leather, premium audio, 11-inch touchscreen + 11-inch driver display, ambient lighting. Cabin tech: 11-inch touchscreen + 11-inch driver display standard mid-trim, Google built-in (native Maps/Assistant/Play Store), Super Cruise hands-free highway available on Denali. Towing: 7,700 lb max on V6 / 7,000 lb on 2.7T 3rd gen.
