The Envision is Buick's compact luxury crossover — slotted between Encore GX and Enclave. Two generations on the US market. 1st gen (2016-2020): launched US 2016 model year as the first Chinese-built Buick imported to the US in volume — built at SAIC-GM Yantai, Shandong, China. The China build was strategically controversial when it launched but Buick's logic was sound: Buick is massively popular in China (the largest Buick market globally), the Chinese plant had spare capacity, and US Envision sales would supplement domestic Chinese consumption. 1st gen powertrains: 2.5L Ecotec NA I4 (197 hp) or 2.0L Ecotec turbo I4 (252 hp), 6-speed automatic. 2nd gen (2021-present): complete redesign on GM E2 platform shared with Cadillac XT4 / Chevy Equinox. 2.0L Ecotec turbo I4 (228 hp / 258 lb-ft), 9-speed automatic, FWD or AWD. Continued China build at SAIC-GM Yantai. Trims: Preferred (base), Essence, Avenir (top — luxury-finished, quilted leather, 21-speaker Bose, head-up display, ventilated seats — Buick's flagship trim). 2024 mid-cycle update brought refreshed front fascia, updated cabin trim with larger touchscreen, and revised Buick branding. Pricing $36k-$48k. The Envision has been Buick's quiet success story — Chinese build raises long-term tariff questions but the value proposition has held strong. Avenir trim has been particularly successful — buyers attracted to Cadillac-tier interior at Buick pricing.
