Most reliable cars sold in Britain

Five cars where the documented common-issues list is genuinely thin and the powertrain has demonstrated 200,000+ mile durability in volume. UK-specific picks — different from the American list because the British market has had access to JDM and European products America never saw.

Reliability rankings are usually polluted by recall counts (which actually correlate with thoroughness, not failure) and by infotainment complaints from people who haven't broken anything mechanical. The list below is different — it's drawn from the cars in our 356-lineage UK catalog where the common-issues list is genuinely thin, the powertrain has demonstrated 200,000+ mile durability in volume, and the engineering choices were conservative on purpose.

Excluded from this list: cars that haven't been on sale long enough to know (every 2024+ EV, every all-new platform), and cars where reliability is brand reputation rather than a documented record (most Hondas of the last decade — better than average but not at this list's bar).

The list

1. Lexus LC

The 5.0L 2UR-GSE V8 in the LC500 and the LC500h's hybrid powertrain represent the last of Toyota's over-engineered atmospheric powertrains. The LC has accumulated nearly a decade of UK ownership data with almost no powertrain failures recorded. The build quality matches the engineering — UK Lexus dealers consistently report LC owners returning their cars in showroom condition at trade-in. The combination of conservative engineering, low production volume, and Lexus build culture produces the most reliable luxury GT sold in Britain.

2. Toyota Corolla

The current 12th-generation Corolla (2019+) and its hybrid variants have produced essentially zero documented mechanical failures across the UK fleet. The Corolla is the best-selling nameplate in automotive history globally, and the 2019+ generation's hybrid powertrain (1.8L Atkinson-cycle + electric, or 2.0L Atkinson + electric) has demonstrated 200,000+ mile durability in fleet service. UK taxi operators have replaced earlier Prius fleets with Corolla Touring Sports hybrids precisely because of the durability record.

3. Honda Jazz

The Jazz hybrid (2020+) and earlier 1.3L i-VTEC variants of the 2nd / 3rd / 4th generation Jazz are the most reliable supermini sold in the UK. UK Honda dealers report Jazz with 250,000+ miles arriving for routine service with no major repairs in their history. The Jazz's space-magic interior packaging produces a vehicle that is cheaper to run than any other supermini and lasts significantly longer than its segment competitors.

4. Toyota Prius

The 2nd / 3rd / 4th generation Prius hybrids have shown extraordinary durability in UK private-hire fleets — London minicab operators have documented 400,000+ mile lifespans on original hybrid batteries with only routine maintenance. Hybrid battery replacement (when it eventually fails) is the largest expense, but the timing of that failure is typically 200,000+ miles, by which point the vehicle has paid for itself many times over. Toyota's hybrid synergy drive technology has accumulated more reliable miles than any other electrified powertrain on Earth.

5. Mazda CX-5

The 2.0L and 2.5L SkyActiv-G petrol engines in the CX-5 (2012+) have demonstrated meaningful durability without the early-2010s reliability concerns that plagued earlier Mazda direct-injection products. UK-spec CX-5 with the 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel (2012-2018) was the weak link — DPF failures and high-pressure fuel pump wear — but the petrol-only US-derived spec from 2018+ has been excellent. Skyactiv compression ignition (2024+ Skyactiv-X) is unproven and excluded here.
