Volkswagen ID.4
VW's volume US BEV. MEB platform. US-built (Chattanooga). 282 hp AWD Pro S Plus. Heavy lease incentives.
The ID.4 is Volkswagen's volume battery electric vehicle for the US market — the brand's flagship EV in America. Built on the dedicated MEB (Modular Electric) platform that VW developed for its EV strategy. Critically, US-market ID.4 is built at VW Chattanooga, Tennessee (alongside Atlas) since 2022 — making it federal-tax-credit eligible. Originally sold as Germany-built 2021 model year, US production began 2022. Single generation. Two battery sizes: 62 kWh (smaller pack, base trims) and 82 kWh (the more popular larger pack, 77 kWh usable). Powertrain configurations: Standard RWD (single rear motor, 201 hp, ~209 mi range with 62 kWh), Pro RWD (single rear motor, 282 hp / 402 lb-ft, ~291 mi range with 82 kWh), Pro S RWD (same powertrain, top trim), Pro AWD (dual-motor AWD, 282 hp combined, ~263 mi range), Pro S Plus AWD (top sport trim, 335 hp / 472 lb-ft, ~250 mi range, 5.4 sec 0-60). DC fast-charging peak 170 kW. 2024 facelift brought refreshed cabin with physical buttons returning to steering wheel (the 2021 ID.4's all-touch controls were widely criticized), Volkswagen Travel Assist 2.0 semi-autonomous standard, and updated 12-inch infotainment. Pricing $42k-$58k. The ID.4 has been VW's strongest US EV play — heavy lease incentives have moved volume, federal tax credit eligibility helps. Some software issues plagued early builds.
