Volkswagen GTI
The hot-hatch reference standard. Forty-eight years and counting.
The GTI invented the hot hatch in 1976 and has been the segment standard ever since. The Mk5 (2006-2009) brought the 200bhp 2.0T FSI and the DSG twin-clutch to America; the Mk6 added the more reliable TSI engine; the Mk7 (2015-2021) hit 220bhp and is widely considered the best modern GTI; the Mk8 (2022-) bumped to 241bhp but lost the manual gearbox option for 2025+. The Golf R is the all-wheel-drive halo above; the GTI is the everyman's enthusiast car. Hold its value better than almost any front-drive car.
