The Golf R arrived in America in 2012 as the all-wheel-drive halo above the GTI. The Mk7 R (2015-2019) hit 292bhp; the Mk7.5 R refined it; the Mk8 R (2022-) makes 315bhp with a launch-control 4.4-second 0-60. Always offered with a manual until the Mk8.5 dropped it. The Golf R is the European answer to the WRX STI — same all-weather mission, very different execution. Used Mk7 R hatchbacks are the smart-money buy for under $30k.
