Three generations across the run. 1st gen (2001-2009): P2/P24 platform shared with V70/XC70/S80. 2.4L I5 (168 hp) base, T5 turbo I5 (247 hp), and the S60 R halo (2003-2007) with high-output 2.5L turbo I5 (300 hp / 295 lb-ft), 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto, Haldex AWD. R also got Brembo brakes, Four-C adjustable dampers, unique seats. 2nd gen (2011-2018): P3 platform. 2.0L T5 turbo I4 (240 hp / 258 lb-ft) base, 3.0L T6 turbo I6 (300 hp / 325 lb-ft) optional, Polestar (2014-2018) with 3.0L turbo I6 (367-385 hp), then late T8 PHEV Polestar (2018) at 415 hp. 6-speed or 8-speed Aisin auto. FWD or Haldex AWD. 3rd gen (2019-2024 US): SPA platform shared with V60/XC60/XC90/S90. Built at Volvo Cars USA's Ridgeville, South Carolina plant — Volvo's first US factory. T5 (250 hp / 258 lb-ft) FWD I4, T6 (316 hp) twin-charged I4, T8 Polestar Engineered PHEV (415 hp launch, then 455 hp 2022+) — twin-charged 2.0L I4 + electric motor, ~35 mile EV range, AWD-only. 8-speed Aisin automatic. T8 Polestar Engineered uses Öhlins manually-adjustable dampers (you adjust the click setting yourself), Brembo brakes, gold seatbelts. Discontinued in the US after 2024 model year. Strong reviews throughout but sedan segment collapsed in the US. Used T8 Polestar Engineered cars now hold value remarkably well — 415-455 hp luxury sedan that's becoming rare.
