Subaru Baja
Subaru's quirky pickup-CUV hybrid. Outback-based with bed. 2.5L H4 (165 hp) or 2.5L turbo H4 (210 hp). 4-year run. Cult classic.
The Baja was Subaru's quirky pickup-crossover hybrid sold US 2003-2006 — Subaru's bet that buyers wanted a small open-bed vehicle with crossover-style cabin / drive characteristics. Single generation. Built on Outback platform with the rear cabin chopped off to create a 4-foot pickup bed. Built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), Lafayette, Indiana. 2.5L EJ253 NA flat-4 (165 hp / 166 lb-ft) base, with the desirable Baja Turbo (2004-2006) featuring 2.5L EJ255 turbo flat-4 (210 hp / 235 lb-ft — same engine as 2004-2005 Forester XT / Legacy GT). 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission, AWD standard across the entire run (Subaru's signature, no FWD trim). The Baja was commercially unsuccessful — Subaru sold roughly 30,000 Bajas total over 4 years (vs Outback's hundreds of thousands per year). Discontinued after 2006 model year. The vehicle's flaws — only 4-foot bed length (too short for most pickup uses), 7-inch tall plastic 'switchback' surround on the bed (made the cabin/bed transition awkward), and Subaru-typical interior materials — limited mainstream appeal. However, the Baja has become an enduring cult classic since discontinuation — fans love the unique combination of Subaru AWD reliability + small pickup capability + distinctive 'definitely not the same as everyone else' styling. Baja Turbo with manual transmission is the most-desired variant and trades for $15-22k+ in 2026 (clean low-mileage examples). The Baja represents one of Subaru's most distinctive product gambles of the modern era.
