Rivian R1S First Generation (2022-present)
R1T's 3-row SUV sister. Adventure-positioned. Quad-Motor (1,025 hp / 2.5 sec). USA-built.
Single generation since 2022 with significant 'Gen 2' update for 2024 model year. Built at Rivian Normal, Illinois Manufacturing Plant. Underlying Rivian Skateboard architecture shared with R1T pickup — battery / motors / chassis components shared, only the body and packaging differ. Gen 1 (2022-2023) powertrains: Dual-Motor (533 hp standard / 665 hp Performance Dual-Motor), and Quad-Motor (4 motors, 835 hp / 908 lb-ft combined, 3.0 sec 0-60). Gen 2 (2024+) restructured configurations: Standard Dual-Motor (single rear motor pair, 533 hp / 610 lb-ft, ~270 mi range with Standard battery), Dual-Motor Performance (665 hp / 829 lb-ft), Tri-Motor (3 motors, 850 hp / 1,103 lb-ft combined, ~371 mi max range), and Quad-Motor (4 motors, 1,025 hp / 1,198 lb-ft combined, 2.5 sec 0-60, ~370 mi range — the new ultimate halo). Battery sizes: Standard (~92 kWh), Large (122 kWh — the volume option), Max (180 kWh — gives the ~400 mi range halo number on Standard configs). DC fast-charging peak 220 kW at 800V architecture (Rivian was early on 800V, predating Hyundai/Kia rollout). 11 kW AC onboard charger standard. Cabin: 15.6-inch landscape touchscreen + 12.3-inch driver display, Meridian 22-speaker premium audio standard on mid-trim and up, three-row 7-passenger layout with available second-row captain's chairs option (6-passenger). 7,700 lb tow capacity — highest in any 3-row luxury EV. 9.6 kW V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) standard — Rivian's signature feature, most useful camping power output in any production EV (will run a tent's full electrical load including induction cooktops). Air suspension standard with adjustable height. DriveAID ADAS system with hands-free highway driving in select Tesla-rivaling corridors. Trims: Adventure Package, Performance, Quad-Motor Adventure. Federal tax credit eligible at delivery (USA-built, US battery sourcing where applicable). The R1S has been Rivian's commercial success story — three-row buyers have responded well to the adventure positioning vs the R1T pickup's softer sales (pickup buyers are more brand-loyal to Ford / Chevy / Ram). NACS port adoption confirmed for 2026 model year.
