Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Three Generations (2002-present)
Luxury van standard. 4WD optional. Diesel or gas I4. US-built. Dominant RV chassis.
Three generations on the post-2001 US market. NCV1 (2002-2006): launched 2001 in Europe as Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, came to US for 2002 model year as Freightliner / Dodge Sprinter (DaimlerChrysler co-marketing — Mercedes wasn't yet selling its own light commercial brand in the US at scale). 2.7L OM647 turbo-diesel I5, 2.3L gas I4 (briefly), 5-speed automatic. RWD only. NCV2 (2007-2018): launched 2006 in Europe, US 2007 as Mercedes-Benz Sprinter / Dodge Sprinter through 2009. After 2009, US sales were Mercedes-Benz-branded only. 3.0L OM642 turbo-diesel V6 (188 hp / 325 lb-ft) was the dominant engine, 2.1L OM651 turbo-diesel I4 (161 hp / 265 lb-ft) added later as efficiency option. 5-speed automatic 7G-TRONIC through most of the run. RWD or 4WD optional (unique in the segment). Got facelifts in 2010 and 2014. NCV3 (2019-present): complete redesign launching 2018 in Europe / 2019 model year US. Built at Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston, South Carolina for North American market (some Düsseldorf-built imports for specific configurations). Two engine options for current US 2025/2026 spec: 2.0L OM654 turbo-diesel I4 (188 hp / 325 lb-ft, 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic, RWD or 4WD optional — the 'High Output' diesel), and 2.0L M260 turbo gas I4 (208 hp / 258 lb-ft, 9G-TRONIC, RWD or 4WD optional). 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel was offered briefly on early NCV3 but discontinued in 2022. Body styles: Cargo Van (standard wheelbase 144-inch, long wheelbase 170-inch, extended 170-Ext, with Standard Roof or High Roof), Passenger Van (12-passenger or 15-passenger configurations), Cab Chassis (for upfitters / RV manufacturers / box trucks), and Crew Van (split — 5-passenger seats up front, cargo area at rear). 4WD option is genuine all-wheel drive with low range — highly desirable for camper conversions and overland builds. Cabin: 7-inch touchscreen standard, 10.25-inch MBUX touchscreen optional. Driver assistance: adaptive cruise, lane keep, blind spot all available. The Sprinter is the dominant van platform for high-end RV conversions in North America — Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland MODE, Outside Van conversions, Coachmen Beyond, and dozens of independent upfitter shops all build on Sprinter chassis. Class B RV / camper-van conversions of Sprinters command $120-200k+ MSRP finished. Mercedes also offers a pre-built RV variant in Europe — the 'Sprinter California' camper — but that's not officially imported to the US. Pricing: cargo van starts ~$50k bare, passenger van ~$58k starting, cab chassis $52k+ depending on config, finished RV conversions $120-220k.
