Mercedes-Benz CLA Two Generations (2014-2025)
Cheapest Mercedes sedan. AMG CLA 45 (382 hp) is the halo. C119 launching with hybrid I4.
Two generations covered through the C119 launch. 1st gen (C117, 2014-2019): launched 2013 as 2014 model year, Mercedes-Benz's first FWD-based sedan in the US in decades. Built on MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform shared with A-Class / GLA / GLB. 2.0L turbo I4 M270 (208 hp / 258 lb-ft) base, 7G-DCT 7-speed wet dual-clutch, FWD or 4MATIC AWD. AMG CLA 45 (M133): 375 hp / 350 lb-ft — at launch the most powerful 2.0L 4-cylinder ever offered in a production car (Mercedes spec'd the M133 with carbon-fiber composite features and unique forged internals). 7G-DCT, performance-tuned 4MATIC AWD with rear-bias capability under load. AMG CLA 45 went 0-60 in 4.0 sec — quicker than CLA 63 / E63 from the prior generation. 2nd gen (C118, 2020-2025): launched 2019 on MFA2 platform. CLA 250 (M260 2.0L turbo, 221 hp / 258 lb-ft, 8-speed wet DCT replacing 7G-DCT), AMG CLA 35 (302 hp / 295 lb-ft, 8-DCT, 4MATIC), and AMG CLA 45 (M139 2.0L turbo, 382 hp / 354 lb-ft — bumped from C117's 375 hp, 8-DCT, 4MATIC+ AWD with AMG Drift Mode option). The M139 in CLA 45 became the most powerful 2.0L engine ever in a production car at launch. 0-60 in 3.9 sec on AMG CLA 45. Built at Mercedes Kecskemét, Hungary. Cabin: MBUX dual-display dashboard (10.25-inch driver display + 10.25-inch central touchscreen) standard, 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant, augmented reality navigation. Mid-cycle update for 2024 brought refreshed front fascia and updated MBUX software. 3rd gen (C119, 2026 model year - launching late 2025): built on Mercedes' new MMA (Modular Architecture) platform — designed from inception to support both ICE and EV powertrains in the same body. Powertrains: CLA Hybrid (1.5L turbo I4 with 48V mild-hybrid integrated motor, ~180-190 hp combined system, 8-speed DCT, FWD or 4MATIC AWD), and the dedicated CLA EV variant (electric-only, ~85 kWh battery, ~270 mi range, dual-motor AWD option, 800V architecture). The CLA C119 launches with the most efficient platform Mercedes has ever sold — significantly improved aerodynamics, weight reduction, and battery technology. AMG CLA C119 powertrain not yet confirmed — expected to be a hybrid I4 making 400+ hp combined system. The CLA has been Mercedes' US entry-point and a major volume contributor, but slow sales in 2024-2025 as buyers awaited the C119. AMG CLA 45 cars (both gens) hold value exceptionally well due to the engine's reputation.
