Chevrolet Bolt
America's earliest mainstream EV. 1st gen (2017-2023) Orion, MI. Discontinued 2023 over battery recall. New Bolt EV launching 2026 on Ultium.
The Bolt was America's earliest mainstream affordable battery electric vehicle — launched 2017 model year as one of the first non-Tesla BEVs sold for under $40k pre-incentive. Built at GM Orion Assembly, Michigan. 1st gen (2017-2023): 60 kWh battery early, 65 kWh battery later, single-motor FWD, 200 hp / 266 lb-ft, ~259 mi range. Cabin was basic but functional — distinguishing feature was the DC fast-charging via CCS Combo 1 (rare in 2017 budget EVs). Bolt EUV (Electric Utility Vehicle) added 2022 — slightly larger crossover-styled variant on the same platform, ~247 mi range. Discontinued after 2023 model year due to a major battery fire recall that affected nearly all Bolts produced — LG Energy Solution (the battery supplier) was found to have had cell-manufacturing defects causing thermal runaway events. GM repurchased some early Bolts and replaced batteries on others. The recall damaged the Bolt's reputation and contributed to GM's decision to end production. New Chevrolet Bolt EV launching 2026 model year — built on Ultium platform, expected at GM Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Specs not yet final but Chevrolet has confirmed: lower starting price than 1st gen (target sub-$30k), NACS port standard (Tesla-style), larger battery, and continued affordability positioning as Chevrolet's entry-level EV. The 2026 Bolt EV is GM's response to slowing high-end EV sales by going aggressively after the under-$30k volume EV space.
