BMW XM First Generation (2023-present)
BMW M's first standalone since M1. PHEV V8 (644-738 hp). Polarizing styling. Slow sales.
Single generation since 2023. Built at BMW Spartanburg, South Carolina (BMW's only US plant). The XM is BMW M Division's first standalone model since the M1 supercar of 1978-1981 — designed from inception as an M product, not an M variant of an existing BMW. Two trims: XM (base, 644 hp / 590 lb-ft combined, 4.1 sec 0-60) and XM Label (top, 738 hp / 738 lb-ft combined, 3.7 sec 0-60, ~177 mph top speed — at launch the most powerful production BMW ever made). Powertrain: 4.4L S68 twin-turbo V8 (the same engine architecture as M5, X5 M, X7's M Performance trims, and the 'Hot V' BMW designation — turbos in the V) + electric motor integrated into the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, 25.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, ~30 mile EPA EV range (silent EV-only mode), system efficiency rated at 39 MPGe combined when running on battery, ~13 mpg as conventional hybrid in V8 mode. M xDrive AWD with electronic locking M Differential at rear axle, rear-biased torque distribution under aggressive driving with selectable 4WD off mode for drift. Cabin: BMW Curved Display (12.3-inch driver + 14.9-inch central touchscreen in unified curved panel), iDrive 8.5 with QuickSelect, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound standard (XM-specific tuning), Merino leather throughout, optional Vintage Black or Silverstone color packages, ambient lighting throughout, panoramic sky lounge LED roof, Active Roll Stabilization, M-specific air suspension with adaptive dampers. Standard equipment: Driving Assistance Professional, parking assist, surround-view camera, head-up display. Pricing $160k starting (XM) / $190k+ XM Label. The XM has been commercially disappointing — slow sales since launch in the US, polarizing styling that critics have called 'over-designed' and 'busy', and mixed reviews ('genuinely fast but not what M traditionally means'). BMW M traditionally focuses on subtle aggression and pure performance rather than overt styling — the XM's bold, intentionally controversial design has not connected with traditional M buyers. Sales by 2024-2025 were significantly below initial projections. Critics also note that the XM's ~6,000 lb curb weight undermines the 'M' performance claim — M5 CS at 4,000 lb feels more agile despite less peak power. Discontinuation by mid-cycle has been rumored if sales don't recover.
