BMW X4
X3's coupe-styled sister. Two generations. xDrive30i (248 hp), M40i (382 hp), X4 M (503 hp). Built in Spartanburg.
The X4 is BMW's coupe-styled mid-size SUV — sister to the X3 with a fastback roofline that sacrifices cargo / rear headroom in favor of sportier proportions. Two generations. 1st gen (F26, 2015-2018): launched 2014 as 2015 model year, on F25 X3 platform. xDrive28i (240 hp 2.0T), xDrive35i (300 hp 3.0T I6), xDrive M40i (355 hp 3.0T I6). 8-speed automatic, xDrive AWD standard. Built at BMW Spartanburg, South Carolina (BMW's only US plant — also builds X3, X5, X6, X7, XM). 2nd gen (G02, 2019-present): launched 2018 as 2019 model year on the new CLAR-based X3 G01 platform. xDrive30i (B48 2.0L turbo I4, 248 hp / 258 lb-ft), xDrive M40i (B58 3.0L turbo I6, 382 hp / 369 lb-ft), and the M-division flagship X4 M Competition (S58 3.0L twin-turbo I6, 503 hp / 479 lb-ft, 8-speed automatic, M xDrive AWD with rear-bias under load, 3.6 sec 0-60). 2022 mid-cycle refresh brought refreshed front fascia (with controversial larger kidney grilles), updated iDrive 8 with curved display, and revised cabin trim. iDrive 8.5 with QuickSelect added 2024. Pricing $58k-$94k. The X4 has slower sales than the X3 in the US — coupe-styled SUVs have struggled against traditional SUV body styles in this size class. Discontinuation rumored for the 4th-generation X3 cycle (G45) launching 2025 — BMW may fold the X4's role into a single iX3 / X3 lineup as the X4 hasn't justified its development costs in the US.
