Acura TL 4th Gen (UA8/UA9)
Power Plenum grille era. SH-AWD added, plus a 305-hp 3.7L V6 with 6-speed manual. Polarising looks but underrated dynamics.
The fourth-gen TL is the one with the controversial 'Power Plenum' shield grille — Acura's senior management called it bold; the rest of the world called it the gladiator-shield TL. Polarising, but the engineering was strong. Front-drive cars used the 280-hp 3.5-litre V6; the SH-AWD option came with a 305-hp 3.7-litre V6 — at the time, the most powerful engine ever fitted to an Acura — and from 2010-2014, that 3.7 SH-AWD was available with a 6-speed manual transmission. A six-speed manual full-size all-wheel-drive luxury sedan is genuinely rare; the closest equivalent today would be an Audi RS3 or BMW M3, both of which are much faster and much more expensive. A 2012 facelift toned down the grille, swapped to a six-speed automatic, and refreshed the interior. The TL was discontinued at the end of 2014 and replaced by the TLX. Used market is a sweet spot now — manual SH-AWD examples hold value, but automatic FWD cars are very affordable.
Strengths
- 6-speed manual + SH-AWD + 305 hp + V6 = uniquely specced for the segment
- SH-AWD genuinely improves cornering, not just traction
- 2012+ facelift fixed the grille controversy
- Interior much improved over UA6
- Strong reliability and corrosion resistance
Weaknesses
- Pre-facelift styling will always be divisive
- Heavy at 4,000+ lb on SH-AWD
- Older 5-speed automatic on 2009-2011 cars feels dated
- Tech package nav system slow by modern standards
Notable tech
- SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) with torque vectoring
- 3.7-litre V6 making 305 hp — Acura's most powerful production engine at the time
- 6-speed manual on 3.7 SH-AWD (2010-2014 only — rare option)
- Power Plenum grille (love it or hate it)
- ELS-developed audio system, up to 10 speakers
- Adaptive cruise control optional on Tech package
Common issues
- VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) system can cause oil consumption on V6
- Power steering pump leaks (a recurring Acura issue)
- Front strut mount knocking
- AC compressor failure
- Tech package navigation freezes
Used-market budget
$13,000
Manual 3.7 SH-AWD examples are the gem and command $15-22k. Standard FWD cars from $6-12k. Post-facelift (2012-2014) cars are visually preferred and worth a premium.
