Acura TL 1st Gen (UA1/UA2)
The first TL. Built in Japan with an unusual 2.5L inline-five option. Mostly forgotten now.
The first-generation TL was Japan-built (Sayama plant) and the only Acura ever sold with a five-cylinder engine — the 2.5 TL got a 176-hp 2.5-litre inline-five carried over from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2-litre V6 from the Legend (200 hp). Both engines mounted longitudinally for better weight distribution, an unusual choice for a transverse-FWD platform. Frameless windows, a long hood, and a fastback profile gave it more visual presence than the price suggested. The five-cylinder is a curio today; the V6 is the picks of the litter for daily use, though all are getting old enough that condition matters more than spec.
Strengths
- Unusual five-cylinder engine option (now a curio)
- Solid build quality from Japanese assembly
- Frameless windows, smooth fastback profile
- V6 has Honda reliability when serviced properly
- Cheapest entry into the TL lineage
Weaknesses
- All examples now 27+ years old
- Five-cylinder parts harder to source than V6
- Original navigation systems long obsolete
- Rust in northern climates
- Few survive in clean condition
Notable tech
- Five-cylinder 2.5-litre engine (sole Acura with that configuration)
- Longitudinally-mounted engine for FWD drivetrain
- 4-speed automatic, no manual offered
- Frameless door windows
Common issues
- Aging A/C compressors
- Stretched timing belts on V6 (interference engine — replace at intervals)
- Transmission shudder on 4-speed automatic
- Rust around fenders, sills, sunroof
- Cracked dashboards from sun exposure
Used-market budget
$4,500
Most surviving examples are project cars or tired daily drivers. Excellent original-condition examples are rare and command a premium.
