Volkswagen Golf (US)
European hatchback hero, never sold well in America. Discontinued 2021.
Americans never quite warmed to the Golf the way Europeans did, and Volkswagen pulled the base Golf from the US market in 2021 (the GTI and Golf R continue). The Mk5 (2006-2009) was the first one VW actually built well; the Mk6 was a refinement; the Mk7 (2015-2021) was peak Golf. The diesel TDI variants got caught up in Dieselgate and were bought back by VW; many were resold as refurbished. As a small premium hatchback the Golf was always more European-feeling than its American competitors — that was both its appeal and its problem.
