Four generations across the run. 1st gen XL10 (1998-2003): replaced the mid-engined RWD Previa with a conventional FWD layout based on stretched Camry platform. 3.0L 1MZ-FE V6 (194 hp / 209 lb-ft), 4-speed automatic, FWD only. Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. 2nd gen XL20 (2004-2010): significantly larger (5 inches longer wheelbase, 4 inches wider, 1.6 inches taller). Production moved to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana (Princeton) where it has remained since. 3.3L 3MZ-FE V6 (230 hp / 242 lb-ft, 2004-2006), 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 (266 hp / 245 lb-ft, 2007-2010). 5-speed automatic. AWD optional from 2004 — Sienna was the only minivan in its class with AWD from 2006 (after GM dropped AWD minivans) until 2021 Pacifica. AWD used run-flat tires (no spare). 2007 mid-cycle refresh introduced the 3.5L V6, vehicle stability control standard 2008. 3rd gen XL30 (2011-2020): bolder styling. 2.7L 1AR-FE I4 (187 hp / 186 lb-ft, FWD only) base 2011-2012 — discontinued 2013 due to lack of demand. 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 (266 hp / 245 lb-ft 2011-2016, 296 hp / 263 lb-ft from 2017 with direct injection as 2GR-FKS). 6-speed automatic 2011-2016, 8-speed automatic 2017+. AWD optional throughout. SE sport-tuned trim introduced (firmer suspension, 19-inch wheels, sportier styling). 2015 mid-cycle structural refresh + 2018 ToyotaSafetySense P standard. 4th gen XL40 (2021-present): completely redesigned on TNGA-K platform (shared with Camry). Hybrid-only across entire range — first US minivan to be hybrid-only. 2.5L Atkinson 4-cyl + dual electric motors + 1.9 kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery (245 hp combined), eCVT. FWD or AWD — AWD adds a third electric motor on the rear axle (no mechanical driveshaft, electric-only rear), can engage at any speed below 43 mph. 35 mpg EPA combined FWD, 36 mpg combined AWD — class-leading efficiency. 3,500 lb towing capacity (same as previous V6). Trims: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum. Bridge Console large center storage. Super Long Slide 2nd-row captain's chairs (up to 25 inches of travel) with optional ottomans. Optional features: built-in vacuum, refrigerator/freezer compartment, 4-zone climate. 2025 mid-cycle refresh introduced 12.3-inch touchscreen optional (8-inch standard) on all trims, refreshed dashboard, refreshed front fascia. Continues at TMMI Indiana.
