Scion xA
Scion's first model alongside xB. Toyota ist (Vitz/Yaris) rebadge. 1.5L, 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto. Replaced by xD for 2008.
The xA was one of two original Scion models launched 2004 (alongside the xB) — a federalised Toyota ist rebadged for the US-only Scion brand. Five-door subcompact hatchback, FWD only, 1.5L 1NZ-FE I4 (108 hp), five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Sold initially in California-only as a 2003-late launch, then nationwide for full 2004 model year. Aimed squarely at young first-time buyers as part of Toyota's youth-marketing strategy: monospec trim levels, no-haggle 'Pure Price' pricing, customisation via dealer-installed accessories rather than factory options, and zero advertising on traditional channels. The xA was the weakest seller of the three original Scions — outsold by both xB (the toaster) and tC (the coupe). Total US xA sales peaked above 30,000 in 2006 before being replaced by the Scion xD for 2008 model year. Now a quiet curio — clean low-mile examples are cheap and unusual sights on roads now.
