Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) — bespoke bonded-aluminum platform engineered at Polestar's UK R&D facility (staffed largely by ex-Lotus engineers from the abandoned Lotus Lambda electric architecture). Bonded aluminum construction is very rare on volume production cars — it's the technology used on the Lotus Elise and Aston Martin Vantage, providing exceptional stiffness for weight. Curb weight: approximately 4,750 lb (significantly lighter than Lucid Air or Taycan Turbo S equivalents). Two trim levels: Polestar 5 dual-motor AWD (804 hp / 686 lb-ft, 0-60 in 3.4 sec, 165 mph electronically limited top speed). Polestar 5 Performance dual-motor AWD (884 hp / 781 lb-ft, 0-60 in approximately 3.0 sec, 165+ mph). Both use a 103 kWh battery with cell-to-pack architecture sourced from CATL — fewer modules, more energy density, lower weight. 800V architecture supporting 350+ kW DC fast charging (10-80% in approximately 22 minutes). EPA range estimates: 300+ miles standard, 280+ miles Performance. Active rear-axle steering standard. Adaptive air suspension standard. Brembo brakes standard. Optional Pilot Pack with lidar for advanced driver assistance and autonomous-driving prep. Standard equipment includes 14.5-inch central touchscreen running Android Automotive, full Nappa leather, Polestar Performance 21-speaker audio system, full panoramic glass roof. Production began late 2025 at Geely's Chongqing plant in China for the global market. Currently the brand's halo flagship — Polestar 6 roadster (announced) is under development as a separate halo. The Polestar 5 has been positively received vs Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air on weight, charging speed, and driving dynamics, though longer-term reliability remains to be tested.

Strengths

  • Bonded aluminum body (Lotus / Aston Martin technology)
  • Dual-motor Performance 884 hp / 781 lb-ft
  • 800V architecture (350+ kW charging)
  • Active rear-axle steering standard
  • Curb weight significantly lighter than Taycan Turbo S
  • Engineered at Polestar UK by ex-Lotus engineers

  • Dual-motor 884 hp Performance
  • 103 kWh cell-to-pack CATL battery
  • 800V architecture supporting 350+ kW DC charging
  • Active rear-axle steering
  • Adaptive air suspension
  • Optional lidar (Pilot Pack)

Common issues

  • Android Automotive software bugs (early cars)
  • Bonded aluminum body specialty repair / insurance
  • Battery cell balance early-car learning
  • Too new for substantial long-term issue patterns

Used-market budget

$140,000

2025 Polestar 5 dual-motor $118-138k. 2025 Polestar 5 Performance $135-165k. Bonded-aluminum body construction means insurance / repair costs significantly higher than steel-bodied competitors. Currently very limited used market.
