Volvo Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform shared with XC90 / S90 underpinnings, but with a uniquely-developed carbon-fibre bodywork — Polestar claimed all upper body panels (doors, hood, trunk lid, fenders, roof) made from carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) saved 500 lb vs steel. Built at the new Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China — Polestar's first dedicated factory. Powertrain architecture is unique: front axle is driven by a twincharged 2.0L Volvo Drive-E inline-four (both supercharger and turbocharger working in series, producing 326 hp / 384 lb-ft) through an Aisin AW 8-speed automatic; rear axle is driven by two independent electric motors (one per wheel), each producing 116 hp for a total of 232 hp / 354 lb-ft on the rear axle, with single-speed reduction gear and torque-vectoring across rear axle. Additionally there's an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) acting as a starter motor and providing torque-fill (68 hp) during gear changes. Combined: 619 hp / 738 lb-ft. 34 kWh battery in three packs (two behind rear seats, one along central tunnel). 52-mile EPA EV range. 0-60 in 4.2 sec, top speed 155 mph (electronically limited). Akebono six-piston aluminum monoblock front brakes, 400x38mm ventilated/drilled discs. Active rear spoiler auto-deploys above 100 km/h (62 mph), retracts below 70 km/h (43 mph). Bowers & Wilkins 1,400W audio, Orrefors crystal gear shift lever, full panoramic glass roof, handcrafted Nappa leather. Two seats up front and two vestigial rear seats (2+2 layout). Curb weight: 5,170 lb (despite carbon-fibre). MSRP at launch: $156,500. Total worldwide production: 1,500 units across 2019-2022. Production ceased November 2021. Now established as cult collector — clean documented examples appreciating measurably year-over-year.

Strengths

  • Limited production: 1,500 units worldwide
  • 619 hp combined (PHEV halo)
  • Carbon-fibre body panels (saved 500 lb vs steel)
  • Akebono six-piston monoblock front brakes
  • 52-mile EPA EV range (segment-leading at launch)
  • Twincharged Volvo T8 + dual rear electric motors
  • Bowers & Wilkins audio + Orrefors crystal shift
  • Cult collector status established

Weaknesses

  • 5,170 lb curb weight (heavy for sports car)
  • Vestigial 2+2 rear seats useless for adults
  • Trunk space minimal (high-voltage cables visible through panel)
  • Production ended — orphaned model line
  • Discontinued 2022, no successor
  • Battery degradation potential at high mileage

Notable tech

  • Volvo SPA platform with carbon-fibre upper body
  • Twincharged 2.0L Volvo T8 (supercharger + turbocharger, 326 hp)
  • Two rear electric motors (116 hp each, torque-vectoring)
  • Integrated Starter Generator (68 hp torque-fill)
  • 34 kWh battery in three packs
  • Akebono six-piston aluminum monoblock front calipers
  • Active rear spoiler
  • Bowers & Wilkins 1,400W audio

Common issues

  • Battery thermal management early-car software updates
  • Active rear spoiler motor failures
  • T8 twincharger pulley wear at high mileage
  • ISG belt wear
  • Carbon-fibre panel chip repair specialty
  • Limited service network outside major metros

Used-market budget
