Mid-size SUV (3-row)

The Pathfinder is Nissan's mid-size three-row SUV — within site post-1995 scope spanning four generations. 2nd gen R50 (1996-2004) in the post-1995 era: body-on-frame construction, 3.3L VG33E V6 (170 hp 1996-1999, 180 hp 2000) then 3.5L VQ35DE V6 (240 hp 2001-2004 — 'VQ-equipped' upgrade), 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual, RWD or 4WD with low-range. Built at Nissan Iwaki, Japan. 3rd gen R51 (2005-2012): completely new on Nissan F-Alpha truck platform shared with Frontier / Titan / Armada. Body-on-frame, 4.0L VQ40DE V6 (266 hp / 288 lb-ft 2005-2010, 261 hp / 281 lb-ft 2011-2012), plus optional 5.6L VK56DE V8 (310 hp / 388 lb-ft, 2008-2012). 5-speed automatic. RWD or 4WD with low-range. Three-row seating standard from R51. 7,000 lb towing on V8. Built at Nissan Smyrna Tennessee. 4th gen R52 (2013-2021): completely new direction — abandoned body-on-frame for unibody crossover construction on Nissan D platform shared with Murano / Maxima / Altima / Quest / Infiniti QX60. 3.5L VQ35DE V6 (260 hp / 240 lb-ft 2013-2016) then 3.5L VQ35DD direct-injection V6 (284 hp / 259 lb-ft 2017+ post-facelift). CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) only. FWD or AWD with 4WD lock setting. Three-row standard. Hybrid variant offered 2014-2015 only. Towing reduced to 5,000 lb. Lighter weight, better fuel economy, but less off-road capability than R51. 5th gen R53 (2022-present): rejected R52's soft styling for boxier truck-like aesthetic. 3.5L VQ35DD V6 (284 hp / 259 lb-ft, 295 hp / 270 lb-ft on Rock Creek Edition). 9-speed ZF automatic (replacing the unpopular CVT — major change). FWD standard, 4WD with terrain modes optional. 6,000 lb towing (improvement). Three-row standard, 7- or 8-passenger configurations. Rock Creek Edition (2023+) — off-road styling package with all-terrain tires, off-road suspension, blacked-out trim. 2026 mid-cycle facelift updates exterior/interior tech. Trims: S, SV, SL, Platinum, Rock Creek. Built at Nissan Smyrna Tennessee. Currently competing against Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade.
