Mazda MX-5 Miata
The reference roadster. Three generations in our timespan.
The Miata is the world's best-selling roadster and the modern reference for what a small sports car should be. The NB (1999-2005) is the under-appreciated one; the NC (2006-2015) was bigger and softer; the ND (2016-) returned to small-and-light and is universally regarded as the best Miata yet. Reliability has always been astonishingly good. The MX-5 RF (retractable hardtop) variant is the more livable daily; the soft-top is the purist pick. NDs with the 2.0L 181bhp engine and a six-speed manual are the modern golden Miata.
