M139 platform — completely new design by Pininfarina, with classic Italian proportions, long hood, short rear deck, long wheelbase. Built at Maserati's historic Modena facility (2004-2009) then transferred to the new Grugliasco plant (Turin) from 2009 onwards. Ferrari-built dry-sump 4.2L F136Y V8 (400 hp / 339 lb-ft) on Quattroporte / Quattroporte Executive GT — same engine architecture as the Ferrari F430. 4.7L F136Y V8 (425 hp / 361 lb-ft) on Quattroporte S (2008+) and Quattroporte Sport GT S (440 hp variant 2009-2012). Initial transmission: ZF 6HP 6-speed automatic mounted at the rear (transaxle layout for 50:50 weight distribution) — sometimes called Duoselect or ZF Sportshift on early cars. RWD only. Standard equipment: full Italian leather, Bose audio, 14-way power front seats, electrochromic mirrors. Optional: Bowers & Wilkins audio, ventilated rear seats, premium leathers (Pelle Frau, Poltrona Frau). 2008 mid-cycle facelift introduced the Quattroporte S V8 (4.7L 425 hp), revised front fascia. 2009 'Sport GT S' added 20-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, sport exhaust. Final special editions in 2011-2012. Total M139 production: approximately 25,000 cars across 8 years. Now firmly cult collector — particularly the Sport GT S and the early 4.2L Cambiocorsa cars are sought after.

Strengths

  • Ferrari-built dry-sump V8 (Italian Ferrari-engineered character)
  • Pininfarina-designed bodywork
  • Transaxle layout (50:50 weight distribution)
  • Dry-sump V8 makes Ferrari-grade noise
  • Cult collector status established
  • Sport GT S the appreciation pick (440 hp)

Weaknesses

  • Cambiocorsa automated manual jerky at low speeds
  • Reliability mixed vs S-Class / 7 Series
  • Maserati dealer network thin in many US markets
  • Cabin tech now 15-20 years old
  • F136 V8 timing chain wear / variator failures
  • Service costs significantly higher than mainstream luxury

Notable tech

  • Ferrari-built 4.2L F136Y dry-sump V8 (400 hp)
  • 4.7L F136Y V8 (425 hp on S, 440 hp on Sport GT S)
  • ZF 6-speed automatic transaxle
  • Pininfarina-designed body
  • Bowers & Wilkins audio (optional)
  • Full Pelle Frau / Poltrona Frau leather options

Common issues

  • F136 V8 timing chain variator failures
  • Cambiocorsa automated-manual clutch wear
  • ZF 6HP auto solenoid failures
  • Sticky tonneau cover motor (where fitted)
  • Window regulator failures
  • Throttle body limp mode codes

Used-market budget

$36,000

2004-2007 4.2L Cambiocorsa $22-32k. 2008-2010 4.7L Sport GT S $32-48k. 2011-2012 final-year cars $36-58k. Documented service history (especially V8 timing chain) is critical.
