Strengths
- 1UZ-FE / 3UZ-FE V8 reliability (300k+ miles common)
- Industry-first eight-speed automatic (2007 LS 460)
- LS 600h was first 8-cyl hybrid in segment (2008)
- Mark Levinson Reference audio (current gen)
- Air suspension AHC across most generations
- Cult collector status established
Weaknesses
- Sales peaked early 2000s, declining since
- Air suspension components age expensively
- Cabin tech behind German competitors on later gens
- Twin-turbo V6 reception mixed vs old V8s
- F Sport variants on gen 5 don't add power
Notable tech
- 1UZ-FE / 3UZ-FE / 1UR-FSE V8 architecture
- Industry-first 8-speed automatic (2007)
- 10-speed automatic (2018+ LS 500)
- 23-speaker Mark Levinson Reference audio
- Active Hydraulic Suspension (AHC)
- Multi-stage hybrid (LS 500h, 2018+)
Common issues
- 1UZ-FE timing belt service neglect (~90k mile interval)
- AHC air suspension air-spring failures
- Mark Levinson amplifier failures
- Power-window regulator failures
- Hybrid inverter issues at high mileage (LS 600h)
Used-market budget
$22,000
2nd gen final $6-15k. 3rd gen $9-22k. 4th gen $18-38k. 5th gen $52-95k. LS 600h hybrid examples worth modest premium. Documented service history (especially AHC suspension) is critical.
