The K5 (and previously Optima) is Kia's mid-size sedan across five generations spanning 2001 to present. 1st gen MS (2001-2005): rebadged Hyundai Sonata EF, V6 engines available — the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan. 2nd gen MG (2006-2010): first MG-platform Kia design, 2.4L I4 or 2.7L V6, manual transmission still offered. 3rd gen TF (2011-2015): clean-sheet redesign by Peter Schreyer with bold styling and the new Tiger Nose grille — became one of Kia's strongest US sales successes. 2.4L NA, 2.0L turbo (274 hp on SX), and the brand's first Hybrid variant (2011+). 4th gen JF (2016-2020): refined evolution, 2.4L NA, 1.6L turbo (178 hp + 7DCT), 2.0L turbo (245 hp). PHEV variant added 2017 with 27-mile EV range. 5th gen DL3 (2021-present): renamed K5 globally to align with international naming. Smartstream platform shared with Hyundai Sonata DN8. Engines: 1.6L turbo (180 hp / 195 lb-ft) on LX/LXS/EX, 2.5L NA (191 hp) on EX, and the new 2.5L turbo (290 hp / 311 lb-ft) on the GT trim with 8-speed wet dual-clutch — the most-powerful Optima/K5 ever. AWD newly available on some trims. 12.3-inch digital cluster + 10.3-inch center screen optional, Bose audio. US K5 production at Kia Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point. Currently competes against Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata.
