Jeep Cherokee
Mid-size SUV across three post-1995 generations (XJ final years, KJ Liberty era, KK, KL). Modern KL was Jeep's compact crossover 2014-2023. Discontinued 2024.
The Cherokee nameplate spans Jeep's longest-running and most varied SUV lineage — within site post-1995 scope: XJ final years (1995-2001), KJ marketed as 'Liberty' in US (2002-2007), KK 'Liberty' (2008-2013), and KL Cherokee (2014-2023). The XJ Cherokee was the original unibody mid-size SUV that defined the segment from 1984-2001, with the bulletproof 4.0L AMC inline-six (190 hp) and a strong off-road heritage — ended US production 2001. KJ Liberty (2002-2007) was the unibody replacement marketed in US as Liberty (still Cherokee globally) — 3.7L PowerTech V6 (210 hp) or 2.4L I4. KK Liberty (2008-2013) was the boxier follow-up — 3.7L V6 (210 hp). KL Cherokee (2014-2023) was the radically redesigned compact crossover that revived the Cherokee name in the US — Italian-developed Compact US-Wide platform shared with Alfa Romeo Stelvio underpinnings, 2.4L Tigershark I4 (180 hp), 3.2L Pentastar V6 (271 hp), and from 2019 a 2.0L turbo I4 (270 hp). Trailhawk trim with locking rear differential, 4WD low-range. KL discontinued globally after 2023 model year — Jeep's lineup realigned around Compass / Wrangler / Grand Cherokee, with Cherokee name retired (and now returning for 2026 as a brand new model). Production: XJ at Toledo, KJ/KK at Toledo, KL at Belvidere Illinois. Now firmly affordable used; XJ examples are cult collector territory.
