Honda's first US SUV — a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo built by Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana. 1st gen (1994-1997) — sold as 1994 model from late 1993. 2.6L Isuzu I4 (120 hp / 150 lb-ft) on DX trim with 5-speed manual, RWD standard. 3.2L Isuzu V6 6VD1 (175 hp / 188 lb-ft) on LX/EX with 4-speed automatic, optional 4WD with low-range. Body-on-frame construction. Some early Passports used GM-built rear axle (GM-Isuzu joint manufacturing). Trims: DX (base, manual, RWD), LX (V6, optional 4WD, automatic), EX (V6, 4WD, auto, leather). 2nd gen (1998-2002) — refreshed bodywork following Isuzu Rodeo facelift. 3.2L Isuzu V6 6VE1 (205 hp / 214 lb-ft) standard, 4-speed automatic. RWD or 4WD with low-range. Better interior plastics, dual airbags standard. Discontinued 2002 when Isuzu exited US passenger car market — Honda's SUV gap was filled by the launch of the all-new Pilot (2003) which used a Honda-engineered platform. Now firmly affordable used and a budget body-on-frame option for buyers wanting Isuzu durability with Honda warranty/dealer access. Now over 20 years old and uncommon in the used market — most have rusted out or been retired.

Strengths

  • Body-on-frame Isuzu durability
  • 5-speed manual offered (1st gen)
  • Low-range 4WD
  • Honda warranty/dealer access (when new)
  • Isuzu Rodeo running gear (proven)
  • Rebadged from established platform (production reliability)

Weaknesses

  • Isuzu mechanicals (Honda warranty / dealer issues at end of life)
  • Discontinued 2002 — orphaned model line
  • Rust susceptibility (Indiana-built, road-salt)
  • Cabin tech 25+ years old now
  • 2.6L I4 underpowered
  • Used parts harder to source vs Honda-engineered models

Notable tech

  • Isuzu 6VD1 / 6VE1 V6 engines
  • Body-on-frame construction
  • Low-range 4WD with locking center diff (some trims)
  • 5-speed Isuzu manual transmission
  • GM-built rear axle (some early cars)

Common issues

  • Rear quarter panel + rocker panel rust
  • 6VD1 V6 timing belt + balance shaft service
  • Frame rust at suspension mount points
  • Isuzu-sourced parts harder to find
  • Power-window regulator failures
  • AC compressor failures

Used-market budget

$5,500

1st gen DX/LX $3.5-6k. 2nd gen V6 cars $5-8k. Documented frame rust inspection is critical for cold-climate cars. Budget-minded body-on-frame buyers only.
