8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 making 1,001 hp at 6,000 rpm and 922 lb-ft from 2,200 rpm. Seven-speed Ricardo dual-clutch transmission, Haldex permanent AWD. Carbon-fibre monocoque. Ten radiators required to cool the engine and intercoolers. The Grand Sport (2009-2015) added a removable polycarbonate roof panel, with no performance penalty over the closed coupe at speeds up to 230 mph. Around 252 of the standard 16.4 / Grand Sport variants were built across the run. The Veyron's launch price of around €1 million / $1.7 million was a record for a road car at the time. Each Veyron reportedly cost VW Group $5-6 million to build — the project was a halo loss-leader for the entire VW empire. Service intervals are bespoke and astronomical: a major service runs into six figures, tyre changes require the wheels to be sent to France for inspection at high mileage, and only a handful of authorised dealers worldwide can perform routine work.

Strengths

  • Created the modern hypercar template
  • 1,001 hp + AWD makes it usable in any conditions
  • Quad-turbo W16 is mechanical art
  • Production rarity (~252 standard 16.4 / Grand Sport)
  • Halo status guarantees long-term collectibility

Weaknesses

  • Service costs are eye-watering ($60-100k+ for major service)
  • Tyre change requires the wheels back to France at high mileage
  • Limited authorised service network
  • 10 mpg combined fuel economy
  • Bespoke parts mean any repair is bespoke-expensive

Notable tech

  • 8.0L quad-turbocharged W16 (1,001 hp)
  • Seven-speed Ricardo dual-clutch transmission
  • Haldex permanent AWD
  • Carbon-fibre monocoque
  • Ten radiators for engine and intercoolers
  • Active aero with deployable rear wing

Common issues

  • Bespoke parts mean any repair is expensive
  • Battery drain when stored unplugged (8-10 weeks)
  • Authorised service network limited globally
  • Tyre wear at high speed is brutal
  • Carbon-ceramic disc replacement costs significant

Used-market budget

$1,800,000

Standard 16.4 examples $1.5-2.0M. Grand Sport $1.8-2.3M. Special editions and low-mile cars at the upper end. Service history with Bugatti factory channels is non-negotiable.
