Audi S8 D3 V10 (2007-2009)
Lamborghini V10 in a full-size luxury sedan. 450 hp, sleeper to end all sleepers. Cult.
Launched 2006 in Europe and 2007 in the US, the D3 S8 used a 5.2-litre FSI V10 derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo (and shared with the C6 S6) — but tuned to a higher 450 hp at 7,000 rpm and 398 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. Six-speed Tiptronic automatic, quattro AWD with Torsen centre differential. 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, electronically limited to 155 mph. The D3 came in only one body — sedan — with an aluminium space frame chassis (Audi's lightweight ASF construction). Standard equipment was full-luxury: Bang & Olufsen audio, ventilated/heated/cooled massage seats, adaptive air suspension, MMI navigation. The D3 is the only full-size luxury sedan ever produced with a V10 from a mainstream brand. Production was small (a few thousand US units across the run); clean examples are appreciating.
Strengths
- 5.2L V10 derived from Lamborghini Gallardo
- Only full-size luxury sedan ever with V10 from a mainstream brand
- Aluminium space frame for relatively low weight
- Quad pipes, 20-inch wheels — looks subtle for the engine inside
- Cult appeal growing as values appreciate
Weaknesses
- V10 fuel economy is brutal (15 mpg combined)
- Carbon build-up on intake valves (FSI)
- Specialist service costs are Lamborghini-adjacent
- Air suspension air-spring leaks common
- MMI generation 1 dated by modern standards
Notable tech
- 5.2L FSI V10 (Lamborghini Gallardo-derived)
- 450 hp (50 hp more than the C6 S6)
- Aluminium Space Frame chassis
- Adaptive air suspension
- Bang & Olufsen audio system
- Quattro AWD with Torsen centre diff
Common issues
- Carbon build-up on intake valves
- Timing chain tensioner concerns (less common than 4.2 V8)
- Air suspension air-spring leaks
- Front control arm bushings
- MMI battery drain
Used-market budget
$22,000
Driver-grade $15-22k. Clean low-mile $25-32k. Verify air suspension service and carbon cleaning. V10 maintenance is expensive — budget accordingly.
