The C6 S6 launched at Frankfurt 2006 with what was then unique in the segment: a 5.2-litre FSI V10 derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10, retuned slightly to 435 hp at 6,800 rpm and 398 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm. Six-speed Tiptronic automatic, quattro AWD, sedan and Avant (wagon) bodies — though only the sedan came to the US. 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, electronically limited to 155 mph. The V10 is a quad-cam 40-valve unit with FSI direct injection, designed by Audi's quattro GmbH (now Audi Sport). The S6's V10 was a one-time-only experiment; the next-generation S6 went back to V8 power. Now a cult car for its engine alone — clean examples have appreciated as enthusiasts recognise the rarity of a V10 sedan from a mainstream luxury brand.

Strengths

  • 5.2L V10 derived from Lamborghini Gallardo
  • Only mainstream luxury sedan ever with a V10
  • Sleeper styling — looks almost like a regular A6
  • Quattro AWD makes it usable year-round
  • Cult collector status now firmly established

Weaknesses

  • V10 fuel economy is brutal (16 mpg combined)
  • Carbon build-up on intake valves (FSI engine)
  • Specialist service required (V10 maintenance is expensive)
  • Tiptronic six-speed feels dated next to modern 8-speeds
  • Tire wear is heavy

Notable tech

  • 5.2L FSI V10 (Lamborghini Gallardo-derived)
  • 435 hp — segment-unique configuration
  • Quattro AWD with Torsen centre differential
  • Six-speed Tiptronic automatic
  • Magnetic Ride adaptive damping

Common issues

  • Carbon build-up on intake valves (FSI)
  • Timing chain tensioner concerns (less common than 4.2 V8)
  • Air suspension failures on Avant (less common in US sedan)
  • MMI infotainment battery drain
  • Front strut mount knocking

Used-market budget

$18,000

Driver-grade examples $13-18k. Clean low-mile $20-28k. Verify carbon-cleaning service. The V10 is rare enough now that good examples are appreciating.
