Audi S5 B8 4.2 V8 (2008-2012)
Last naturally-aspirated V8 in the segment. 354 hp, six-speed manual standard. The cult B8.
Audi's first S5 was launched September 2007 for the 2008 model year with a 4.2-litre FSI V8 — derived from the RS4 B7 engine, retuned to 354 hp at 7,000 rpm and 325 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. Six-speed manual standard, six-speed Tiptronic optional, quattro AWD throughout. 0-60 in around 5.1 seconds. Coupe-only for the first generation; the convertible came with the supercharged B8.5 facelift. Walter de Silva's coupe styling has aged exceptionally well. The 4.2 V8 became a cult engine on the used market for its sound, character, and the rarity of an N/A V8 in the segment by the time the B8.5 came along. Manual examples are increasingly hard to find and command a meaningful premium.
Strengths
- Last naturally-aspirated V8 in the segment
- Six-speed manual is genuinely satisfying

- Carbon build-up on intake valves (FSI direct injection issue)
- Timing chain rattle — known issue requiring specialist service
- Heavier nose than B9 / supercharged variants
- Fuel economy is poor (18 mpg combined)
- Tiptronic six-speed feels dated next to modern 8-speeds
