The Tonale Q4 PHEV pairs a 180 hp 1.3L turbo four (driving the fronts via a six-speed automatic) with a 121 hp electric motor driving the rears. There's no mechanical link between the engine and the rear wheels — the Tonale is essentially a front-drive car with an electric rear axle, which Alfa calls Q4 AWD. 285 hp combined system output, 347 lb-ft. EV-only range is roughly 33 miles, and combined gas+electric range is around 320 miles. 0-60 in around 6.0 seconds. The Veloce trim gets adaptive dampers, torque-vectoring brake control, Brembo brakes and 20-inch wheels. Three drive modes (Dynamic / Natural / Advanced Efficiency) via the DNA selector. Italian-built at Pomigliano d'Arco. Federal tax credit of $7,500 applies on lease.

Strengths

  • $7,500 federal tax credit on lease makes pricing competitive
  • AWD as standard via rear electric motor
  • 33-mile EV-only range covers most daily commutes
  • Veloce chassis tuning is genuinely sharp for the segment
  • Distinctive Alfa styling with proper triangular grille and Tri-LED headlights

Weaknesses

  • Only PHEV available in the US — no cheaper non-hybrid option
  • Infotainment is laggy compared to BMW iDrive or Mercedes MBUX
  • Cargo space limited compared to rivals
  • Six-speed automatic feels dated against BMW's 8-speed
  • Resale values for Alfa SUVs have been weak historically

Notable tech

  • Plug-in hybrid powertrain (285 hp combined)
  • Q4 AWD via rear electric motor (no mechanical driveshaft)
  • 15.5 kWh battery, ~33 miles EV-only range
  • DNA drive mode selector (Dynamic / Natural / Advanced Efficiency)
  • Adaptive dampers + Brembo brakes on Veloce
  • 12.3-inch digital cluster, 10.25-inch touchscreen

Common issues

  • Too new to have meaningful long-term issue data
  • Some early units reported infotainment lag and reboots
  • Alfa's parent Stellantis has middling reliability scores brand-wide
  • Tightly-packaged engine bay makes maintenance tricky

Used-market budget

$42,000

Sprint trim from $32-38k used. Ti $38-44k. Veloce $44-50k. Heavy depreciation has set in already — 2024 cars trade for $10-15k under MSRP.
