The Series 3 (1983-1989) modernised the Spider with chunkier bumpers, redesigned grille, and revised interior — divisive styling but better-equipped. The Series 4 (1990-1994), the final iteration, brought body-coloured bumpers, smoother bodywork, redesigned dashboard, and Bosch Motronic fuel injection replacing the SPICA system. 2.0-litre twin-cam making 120-128 hp depending on year and market. Three-speed ZF automatic was a US-market option (Europe never got the auto). The Series 4 Spider was the last Alfa Romeo officially imported to the US before the brand's 1995 withdrawal — its successor, the GTV/Spider 916, was never federalised. Today these are the affordable entry to classic Alfa ownership; clean Series 4 examples trade $15-25k.

Strengths

  • Bosch Motronic injection on Series 4 is much more reliable than SPICA
  • Most affordable entry into classic Alfa ownership
  • 28 years of parts development means good aftermarket support
  • Last Alfa officially sold in the US until 2008
  • Body-coloured Series 4 styling is the cleanest of the run

Weaknesses

  • Series 3 'big bumper' styling polarises
  • Still rust-prone in the same areas as earlier cars
  • Performance modest by modern standards
  • Auto-equipped US cars are slow
  • Limited soundproofing — wind and engine noise at highway speed

Notable tech

  • Bosch Motronic fuel injection (Series 4)
  • Body-coloured bumpers and integrated styling (Series 4)
  • 3-speed ZF automatic optional in US market
  • Limited 'CE' edition for US run-out (walnut trim, certificate)
  • Last federalised Alfa until 2008

Common issues

  • Rust — Spiders rust, regardless of generation
  • Engine oil leaks (front and rear main, valve cover)
  • Soft-top frame and fabric deterioration
  • Electrical gremlins — common Alfa trait of the era
  • Power window regulator failure

Used-market budget

$18,000

Series 4 (1990-1994) cars $15-25k for clean examples; Series 3 cars $10-18k. CE limited-edition Series 4 commands a slight premium. Auto-equipped cars discount versus manuals. Rust-free Western-state examples preferred.
