Acura TLX 2nd Gen
Type S is the one. 355-hp turbo V6, SH-AWD, Brembos, $54k. Better than a BMW M340i for less money.
Reset on a longer-wheelbase platform with double-wishbone front suspension — the first Acura sedan to get that geometry in years. Standard cars use a 2.0-litre turbo four (272 hp, 280 lb-ft) with a 10-speed automatic; SH-AWD optional. The Type S, launched 2021, returned the badge after a 13-year hiatus and gets a 3.0-litre turbo V6 making 355 hp and 354 lb-ft, plus standard SH-AWD, Brembo four-piston front brakes, adaptive dampers, four-mode drive selector, and quad exhaust outlets. 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, Pirelli P Zero summer tires. The PMC Edition, hand-built at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio (where the NSX is also assembled), runs to 300 units a year. Reviewers consistently rated the Type S as Acura's best-driving sedan since the 2008 TL Type S — the chassis is sharper, the V6 has proper character, and the price ($54k base) significantly undercuts the BMW M340i and Audi S4. Acura ended TLX production with the 2025 model year.
Strengths
- Type S 355 hp / SH-AWD / Brembos is properly fast — 4.9-second 0-60
- Double-wishbone front suspension finally returns to the Acura sedan
- Significantly undercuts BMW M340i and Audi S4 on price
- Adaptive dampers genuinely improve daily comfort
- Quad exhaust sounds purposeful at full throttle
Weaknesses
- Touchpad infotainment takes weeks to learn (and you may never love it)
- Heavy at 4,200+ lb on Type S
- Turbo V6 doesn't sound as good as a naturally-aspirated rival V8
- Rear-seat headroom limited by sloping roofline
- Discontinued — no future Type S generation planned
Notable tech
- 3.0-litre turbo V6 (355 hp) on Type S — first Acura with that engine
- 10-speed automatic with rev-matched downshifts
- Adaptive dampers with four drive modes (Type S adds Sport+)
- SH-AWD with up to 70% rear torque, 100% to one wheel
- Brembo four-piston front calipers on Type S
- PMC Edition hand-built alongside the NSX
Common issues
- Touchpad infotainment learning curve is steep
- Some Type S owners report turbo V6 valve cover oil seepage
- Driver-assistance system occasional false warnings
- Premium tire wear on Type S (Pirelli P Zero ~25k mile life)
Used-market budget
$38,000
Standard 2.0T cars from $28-32k. Type S clean examples $40-48k for 2021-2023, less for higher-mileage. PMC Edition examples command a premium of $5-8k over standard Type S.
