Acura MDX 3rd Gen (YD3)

Lighter, more efficient. Hybrid added 2017-2020. The post-Power-Plenum redesign that didn't quite stick.

Lighter, more aerodynamic, with a 290-hp 3.5-litre V6 (back to 3.5L from the previous 3.7) and a 6-speed automatic for 2014-2015, then a 9-speed from 2016. Front-wheel-drive option added — the first MDX without standard AWD. The 2017 facelift introduced the Diamond Pentagon grille, replacing the Power Plenum, and added the Sport Hybrid: same 3.0L V6 plus three-motor SH-AWD hybrid system, 321 hp combined. The hybrid was a tech showcase but only available 2017-2020 and never sold in volume. Standard fuel economy improved to 21 mpg combined (vs 18 in the previous gen). Most highly regarded MDX for daily-driver duty — comfortable, safe, well-equipped. Acura's Marvel Cinematic Universe partnership had MDXs appearing in The Avengers.

Strengths

  • Significantly lighter than YD2 — better fuel economy
  • Diamond Pentagon facelift looks much better than Power Plenum
  • Sport Hybrid (2017-2020) is genuinely advanced
  • 9-speed automatic from 2016 onwards
  • Excellent IIHS safety scores

Weaknesses

  • FWD-only models lose the AWD character
  • 9-speed automatic took several updates to refine
  • Hybrid was rare and expensive new
  • Third row still meant for kids only
  • Push-button transmission selector divides opinion

Notable tech

  • Sport Hybrid: 3.0L V6 + three-motor SH-AWD = 321 hp (2017-2020)
  • Diamond Pentagon grille from 2017 facelift
  • 9-speed automatic (2016 onwards)
  • Front-wheel-drive option (first MDX without standard AWD)
  • AcuraWatch driver assistance suite standard
  • PMC Edition (2020) hand-built run of 300 in Valencia Red

Common issues

  • Early 9-speed automatic harsh shifts (software updated)
  • Push-button shifter occasional false neutral
  • VCM oil consumption on V6
  • Infotainment occasional reboots
  • Battery drain on Hybrid if left unused

Used-market budget

$22,000

2017+ facelift examples preferred for grille and 9-speed. Hybrid examples ~$25-30k. PMC Edition commands a premium of $5-8k. Avoid pre-2016 cars unless budget-constrained.
