The A3 invented the premium hatchback in 1996 and has dominated it since. Five generations from 8L through 8Y, all on Volkswagen Group platforms (PQ34, PQ35, MQB twice, then MQB Evo). The S3 has been the de-facto warm-hatch benchmark since 2006, and the RS3 brought the five-cylinder warble back to the segment. Saloon and Cabriolet body styles broaden the range. Resale beats a Golf for what's mechanically the same car.
